×In 1543, just before his death, the Renaissance mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus published »De revolutionibus orbium cœlestium« (»On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres«). The book had a huge impact on science: For the first time in history the Copernican model of the universe placed the sun rather than earth at its center.

The illustration for this animation was taken from a digitized version of Copernicus' pioneering work published by the ETH library, Zurich. The interacive model was coded by Prof. Thomas Weibel, Basel.
