"altimeter" is a simple web app that indicates the metric altitude above sea level for any point on earth. the app determines the current location using the html geolocation api and calculates the elevation from the exact position. longitude and latitude values are displayed at the bottom (in degrees, tap to toggle format), the radius represents the geolocation accuracy (in meters). after changing location, the elevation can be recalculated using the reset button.
instead of a barometric unit, the altimeter uses a global digital elevation model (dem) to calculate the sea level, with a mesh size of 30/90 meters. the data comes from copernicus, the earth observation component of the european union’s space programme, and the european space agency (esa).
